WAEMA received visitors from the Military school Accra.

Students of the Junior Division of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College embarked on a 20-day environmental study tour in the Western Region. The tour which was aimed at enhancing study in specific areas in the region was themed, “Promoting Socio-Economic Development in the Western Region for Accelerated Sustainable Development”. These students were divided into group and were spread across selected MMDAs in the region. One of the group paid an education visit to the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly (WAEMA). The team was welcomed by the MCE, the Co-ordinating Director, Heads of Units/Departments and the staff of WAEMA.

In a welcome address at the opening ceremony, The Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Frederick Korankye expressed his excitement for the choice of the municipality for the study and asked them to help identify problems in Municipality and recommended a lasting solutions to the problems they will i dentify.

The Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Ishmael Anaman took the opportunity to highlight on how Western Region contributes towards national economic development. He futhur expressed the role the region plays to the economy as follows: Cocoa, more than 50%, Rubber, 98%, Coconut 85%, Oil Palm, 38%, Cassava, in excess of 1.4 million tons per annum, Gold, 60% and Manganese, 100%. He also added that the region produce Iron and Diamonds in high quantities. He explained that most of these resources are either being exploited or have a high potential for exploitation.

He emphasized that some of the major challenges faced by the Municipality and the region at large is illegal mining popularly known as 'galamsey'. He urged the students and faculty to undertake stimulating research to create a paradigm in creating sustainable development, especially in the above areas.

The team and students were led by Brigadier General Albert Kwadwo Dawohoso, Assistant Commandant, Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, (Junior Division). The student body totals 12, including 2 Nigerians. The MCE and the Co-ordinating Director led the team to various mining site within the municipality where the student had the chance to interact with some miners to get first hand information on their operations.
