The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly in the Western Region Hon. Helena Appiah has presented nine motor bicycles to the agricultural field officers of the assembly under the Modernizing of Agricultural in Ghana programme of the government supported by the Canadian government.
The support is aimed to strengthen the field officers to be able to implement the flagship programmes introduced by the government to increase productivity along the value chain of the agricultural sector.
The MCE noted that logistical constrain has been a major challenge for the agricultural field officers to reach out to farmers in the remote part of the municipality with the needed extension services to help them adopt the best farming practices to increase their yield to ensure food sufficiency and poverty reduction.
She expressed the hope that with the provision of the motor bicycles, the field officers would perform their duties effectively to increase the food basket of the municipality and also encourage the youth to go into agriculture for alternative livelihood instead of illegal mining which has destroyed the environment in the municipality.
She reminded them that their services were critical for the assembly to be able to raise 200,000 cocoa seedlings for distribution to farmers registered under the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) initiative of the government which the assembly was implementing for economic transformation, job creation and industrialization.
The Municipal Director of Agriculture, Mr Daniel Asimenu noted that the donation would boost the capacity of his staff to move to all parts of the municipality to conduct effective farmer registration, education, distribution of inputs, monitoring of the activities of farmers and also offer them the other services that are necessary to increase their yield.
