Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Marks 36th Edition of Farmers Day Awards Celebration

Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly has held its farmers Day Celebration at Appiah Nkwanta on 6th November, 2020 to honour deserving hardworking farmers in the Municipality under the theme, “Ensuring Agribusiness Development under COVID-19- opportunities and challenges”.
This was to commemorate the National Farmers Day Celebration held each year on the first Friday of December to honour the Nation’s gallant farmers and fishers for their immense contributions to the economic development of Ghana.
The Chairman for the occasion, Nana Baffour (Asikumahene) in his welcome address thanked the Municipal Chief Executive and her entourage for organizing the programme in the Appiah Nkwanta community.
The Municipal Crop Farmer in his remarks noted that there was the need for all small scale farmers to see agriculture as a business, but not as a way of life. He supported the call for the consumption of local rice. He also explained to the gathering how one becomes an award winner, and also how a community is selected to host the Farmers’ Day. He took the opportunity to thank all especially, the MCE and the Assembly for sponsoring the celebration of the Farmers day programme.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Helena Appiah in his remarks enumerated activities and programmes implemented by the Government to help increase the standard of living of Farmers in the Municipal.
She touched on planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD), where 45,000 Oil Palm seedlings were distributed to Farmers in the Municipal, on the Planting for Food and Jobs as well as the Special Rice Initiative, 100 bags of rice, 185 bags of maize, 1,450 bags of NPK, 2,000 bags of organic and compost fertilizers were provided to farmers in the Municipal at a subsidized prize.
She also entreated all farmers to take advantage of the opportunities given and work as business men to give meaning to the theme selected for this year.
The award categories for the farmers included the best Municipal Farmer, First and Second runner-up, best Youth farmer, best female farmer, best Physically Challenge farmer, best crop farmer, best aquaculture farmer, best agricultural extension farmer, best cocoa farmer, best small ruminants and vegetable farmers among others.
The awards presented to them included various agricultural equipment and inputs as well as other attractive prices such as refrigerator, Colour Television, tricycle, motor bicycles, sewing machine, pieces of cloths, Ghetto blaster and among others.
