Crowdfunding - Potable water for Nyameadom and Amoatentrom.

Posted on July 28, 2023

Water scarcity, quality, and control are growing issues within the Wassa Amenfi East municipality due to the upsurge of illegal mining (galamsey) activities, which is associated with the pollution of water bodies. Additionally, the effect of climate change has resulted in warmer temperatures that enhance evaporation, which reduces surface water and dries out soils and vegetation.

The population with access to safe drinking water in the Municipality is 65%. The remaining 35% which comprises rural communities do not have access to any secure water services and depend on rivers, streams, dug-outs, or rainwater, which may either be polluted with contaminants from illegal mining (Galamsey) activities or other forms of human activities. The Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly, therefore, intends to increase access to safe drinking water, especially in rural communities to enhance Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.

In line with our mission to improve the quality of life of inhabitants through the provision of effective and efficient socio-economic services in collaboration with other stakeholders of the Assembly, this campaign is therefore to solicit the support of all our stakeholders and development partners towards the construction of 2 Number Boreholes fitted with handpumps to serve the good people of Nyameadom and Amoatenkrom in our dear municipality.

The climate resilient interventions selected by the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly will use the Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility (LoCAL) standard: ISO 14093, an internationally recognized and standardized approach to climate finance delivery to local climate action, hosted at the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). LoCAL provides performance-based climate resilience grants (PBCRGs), an innovative system that channels climate finance to improve local climate change responses.

The implementation of this project will be assessed by the technical team of UNCDF in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development (MLGDRD) and the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC).

Funds accrued will be disbursed with authorization from UNCDF, MLGDRD, and the Ministry of Finance (MoF), through the established PBCRGs system in Ghana. Measures are in place to audit all funds mobilized under the crowdfunding platform, to ensure judicious use of funds received. The PBCRG is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNCDF, MLGDRD, and MoF that stipulates conditions pertaining to financial control, reporting, and auditing arrangements.
